Suzuki, with its combined effort with Maruti, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, in India has been controlling a major part of the car market of the country and now the future plan of Suzuki is to expand and develop its business in the country.
Suzuki Motor has plans to build a new car factory in India and for this the company has plans to invest about $215 million. The company believes that this new initiative will improve and upgrade its production facilities.
The company expecting tougher competition in the county is expected to start production at its new facility by early 2011. The company is also expected to have an annual output capacity of around 250,000 cars.
Having a production capacity of 6.2 lakh units the Gurgaon plant mainly produces 800, Omni, Versa and Gypsy. The company has a production capacity of 6.2 lakh units.
As a part of its expanding plans, the company will shift the car production phase by phase from Gurgaon to the new Manesar unit, which is in Haryana, 50 kilometers away from New Delhi.
The new Maruti Suzuki Estilo has been launched with a revived look. The car not only has changed its look but has also changed its engine. The new car will not have Zen in it but will be simply called Estilo. The new Estilo is a trend setter which matches the moods and thoughts of all young crowd of India.
The new heart, engine of the car is powered by a 998 cc K-Series light weight aluminum engine which meets the norms of the BS IV. The engine is more eco-friendly emitting less carbon dioxide and offers more kilometers per litre, an amazing mileage of 18.2km/l.
The car has new interiors and exteriors as well and this give a completely new look to the car. The car also has a wide range of safety features that includes ABS and airbags. The new Maruti comes in three variants: LX, LXi and VXi. The car is available in eight new colors and is priced between Rs 3.12 Lakh to Rs 3.95 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
Many car manufacturers are joining the ‘green car revolution’ and this time it is the Indian car manufacturer who is planning to go green with its cars. Though it will take some time but the Maruti Suzuki is planning range of CNG hybrids and electric vehicles for the Indian car market in a span of three to five years.
Currently, the car manufacturer is researching the possibility of developing the electric cars for India. Suzuki has already developed a fuel cell technology which currently is undergoing testing with the Hybrid SX4 in Japan in venture with USA based General Motors.
The engine is offered with a mixture of fueled cells and high pressured hydrogen. Besides this the company has also tested the hybrid technology on Wagon R for the Japanese market. Whether the hybrid version of Wagon R will be seen on the Indian roads is still a mystery. All we can do is to hope for the best.
The CNG version cars in India are a very good option because of its low maintenance cost. With many car manufacturers opting for alternative fuel vehicles, the demand is also increasing. The CNG kit costs over Rs 40,000 and it will only become practicable when there is a CNG filling system from companies like Reliance across the country. However, these eco-friendly cars are expected to hit the market 2010 or 2011.
There was a talk in the Indian car market that Maruti 800 and Omni would be phased out. One of the reasons for it was that these cars are not in compliance with Bharat Stage IV emission norms. But now the car manufacturers have decided something else that will further add value to Maruti models.
Very soon all the Maruti models will receive a modifications meeting the Bharat Stage IV emission norms which will come into effect by 2010. Company’s new generation K series engine has proved to be much efficient than the older one. The upgradation will help in providing better fuel efficiency and reduce the emission.
So this means once the models meet the latest emission norms which also include Maruti 800 and Omni, the question of phasing out these models is no more. It is pretty difficult for the manufacturer as well as the people to accept its extinction as they are one of the old players from Maruti Suzuki’s stable.
Currently only couple of Maruti models are powered by the K-series engine and modifying all the models will offer extra to its people like better performance, better mileage without compromising on the emission norms.
The diesel cars are attracting the crowd and Maruti Suzuki is just following the trend. The company foreseeing the growth of diesel cars is now planning to expand the diesel car portfolio. Currently, Swift from the small car segment and Swift Dzire from the sedan class offer the diesel variant. Recently introduced Maruti Suzuki Ritz is also seen with the diesel version.
The diesel variants of the brand are in more demand compare to the petrol variants and currently these variants require nearly 3 to 5 months of waiting period after booking.
Tata Motors is also now focusing on diesel variant; this could be another reason for Maruti Suzuki to go ahead with this decision. Both the car brand hold a major share in the domestic car market and therefore it is important to top the position. And even if in one segment there is a slope then that could lead to dropping of their position. And in today’s competitive world of cars, no manufacturers would take any kind of risk. Be it the trend, necessity, or competition the show must go on.
Maruti Suzuki Ritz will be seen on the Indian roads by May 15th. Ritz from the hatchback segment will be available in both petrol and diesel variants.
This all new model is India’s first car to be in compliance with the BS-IV emission norm. The car will be positioned as premium A2 market segment. The other models of this class are Alto, WagonR, Swift, Zen and A-Star. Ritz will be seen with two engine options- a 1.2-litre four-cylinder K-series engine with an output of 84 bhp and a 1.3 litre, 16-valve diesel engine that produces 74 bhp.
Maruti Suzuki already dominates the small car segment in Indian and by rolling out smaller cars it will further strengthen its position in the market. In last 24 months, the company has introduced seven new models and Ritz becomes the 8th new models to be introduced in the domestic market. Now only time can tell how Ritz is going to succeed in the Indian car market.
Maruti cars won the best APEAL (Automotive Performance Execution and Layout) in the study conducted by JD Power Asia. The international organization conducts a survey on all new cars and offers a list of best cars in terms of new vehicle design and performance, completely based on the response and feedback given by car owners.
Maruti has always been tagged as the biggest Indian car manufacturer. Even in this turbulent time when the car sales are falling and competition is increasing, the company has successfully maintained its grip in the car market.
Four of the Maruti Suzuki cars have won the award for gaining top position in their respective car segments. WagonR topped the compacr car segment, Swift ranked first in the premium compact car segment, Swift Dzire the best option in entry midsize car, and Maruti Suzuki SX4 topped in the midsize car segment
All the four Maruti car models have given a new reason for Maruti to smile. Though the car market is currently facing a meltdown, Maruti is rejoicing its 25th anniversary and the ranking received by JD Power.
