There are chances that Honda Civic Hybrid could be re-launched in India. This will be made possible only if the union government decides to bring down the import duty on environment-friendly vehicles. Honda was forced to stop its sale of Honda Civic Hybrid in India due to the high import duty, of over 104 per cent, it had to pay while bringing the car to India as Completely Built Units (CBU). The on-road price of the Civic Hybrid was much high due to the VAT and excise duty.
Honda Civic Hybrid is the first hybrid car that has been launched in India. It is powered by a 3-stage i-Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) engine, which has three valve timings namely low-speed, valve deactivated, and high-speed mode. The ‘idle-stop’ feature turns off the engine temporarily, which helps in saving fuel and minimizing emissions. The Civic Hybrid has very vibrant interiors and exteriors. Hybrid is an eco-friendly vehicle, with “green” specific features.
Honda Hybrid was introduced in India at price of Rs. 21 Lakh, but Honda had to soon renew the price and sell it for Rs. 13 Lakh. Honda has still not decided upon the price of its to-be re-launched Civic Hybrid. But if the import duty is slashed then Honda Civic Hybrid will be available at a much-cheaper rate. The next on the list of ‘Green car’ for the Indian market Toyota Prius hybrid launch is on hold. The reason for the delay is said to be the infrastructure concern, the heavy-duty structure and the inability to launch at a competitive price.
Honda was the first to launch Civic hybrid with the price tag of Rs 21 Lakh. Recently the price slashed to Rs 13 Lakh for a limited period and this in turn has also affected the Toyota’s plan to launch the Prius hybrid in India.
The company was thinking of rolling out Prius hybrid in India by 2009 with the price tag ranging from Rs 20-22 lakh. Globally Toyota and Honda are the leading car manufacturers of hybrid vehicles.
According to Toyota Kirloskar, “the company is still evaluating the conditions for the hybrid car. However, Fortuner from the SUV segment is expected to hit the Indian roads by mid 2009 and compact car by 2010.
Good news for green car lovers!
Honda has slashed down the prices of its green car, Honda Civic Hybrid, by Rs 8 Lakh. So, this means that the car that was launched with a price tag of Rs 21.5 Lakh will now be available at Rs 13.6 Lakh. That’s exciting!
Since the launch in June 2008, Honda has sold nearly about 63 hybrid cars in the Indian car market but when compared to the Civic petrol the numbers are too low. Petrol counterpart recorded sales of 5000 units in the first six months of its launch in July 2006.
The high price tag was recently coupled with the impact of global recession. This compelled the company to cut down the price and boost sales during this era of downturn.
This is a wonderful opportunity for environment friendly car enthusiasts to get an environment friendly car. So, if anyone of you is willing to drive a green car without any compromise on the driving pleasure, this is the best time for you to shell out a sensational value for the worthy Civic Hybrid.
