It has been some time now since the Italian car maker, Fiat, launched a new car in the Indian car market. Grande Punto was the last car that came from Fiat’s stable. Now, Fiat is planning to launch new cars in India.
Fiat is expected to come out with its small car in 2011-2012. It is also supposed that the upcoming small car from Fiat will be priced at Rs 3-4 Lakh. Fiat at present is looking for the many engine options for its small car. The engine options ranges from 900 cc to 1200 cc. This mew small car will be positioned between Tata Nano and the Grande Punto. And it will have a strong competitor in Ford Figo, the upcoming small car from Ford..
Fiat is targeting to sell 2,00,000 cars by 2012 with an aim of reaching a 7-8 per cent market share. Fiat is also planning to bring in LCVs and premium to India. It is expected that the company will launch Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) in 2012-2014. The company will go on with constructing its network and manufacturing capabilities to produce its own market in India and also a sturdy base for exports of small cars.
It seems like Fiat is planning to sell more cars and pose tough competition to the other car manufacturers in the Indian car market. The different models of the car will be sold not only in India but it will be now exported to other parts of the world.
The company is planning to export over 7,000 units of its different models within this fiscal year. This decision of Fiat India Automobiles could be a very important factor that will help in increasing the car sales of the company.
The company has been, since some time, thinking about and working towards its opportunities outside India. The countries the company had been focusing were the SAARC countries, which include Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan. It looks like Fiat India is concentrating on nations where they have right hand drive.
This year, the company has exported only 700 units of Palio and around 90 Linea. These models which are well received in India are expected to be a major hit in the overseas market also.
All this is to give the company a more stable position in the global car market.
For Tata, Nano is a new phase in its business and Tata is trying to make most of it. Nano is a big hit in the Indian market and this huge success has given all the confidence to the company to plan new horizons for Nano. Nano is now getting ready to make its presence felt in the foreign countries also.
Being already introduced in Europe during the Geneva Motor show, Europa, the European version of Nano will be launched in Europe by 2011. Nano is also expected to be in the United States in few years time. The companies has more launching plans, Nano is also planned to be launched in Latin America, Russia, and South Asian countries
It is good news for Nano that it has cleared the crash test that has been held in U.K. The foreign versions of the car will however have extended features compared to the Indian version.
The price of the Nano and its tie up with Fiat are important features that will bring the company success.
Fiat launched Grande Punto, an interesting addition to the small car segment in Indian. The small car industry in India is very feeble and understanding this, many car manufacturers are focusing on bringing out cars from this segment.
Grande Punto is styled by Giugiaro and is based on the platform of Fiat/GM SCCS. It is powered by Euro IV compliant engine and are available in three engine options namely the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel and the 1.4-litre and 1.2-litre Fire Petrol. The new chassis and body shell and the finest features like anti-lock braking system (ABS) and EBD Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) will make Punto a much-desirable hatchback. Punto makes travel a pleasure with its comfortable and spacious interiors and with its safety features such as the airbags for passengers and driver.
Punto will be available in three variants – Emotion, Dynamic, and Active and falls in the price range of Rs 3.99 Lakh to Rs 6.11 Lakh. Already a hit in the European car market, Punto, will face tough competition from other premium hatchbacks in India such as Hyundai i20, Maruti Swift, and Chevrolet Aveo. Punto will be produced from the company’s plant at Ranjangaon, Maharashtra, and it will be available across the country through over 100 Tata-Fiat dealers.
After a long gap of fifty years Fiat re-entered India with its scintillating coupe Fiat 500 and later introduced the Linea. Fiat Bravo and Punto are still in line to roll out from Fiat’s stable.
Following these launches Fiat also has plans to introduce a supermini made-in-India car for the global car market. There are speculations that the proposed Fiat car is a new Palio but that’s not true. It is a completely new and low-cost car that will be designed using Indian components and Indian expertise. It may look somewhat like a five-door Fiat 500 but will be produced using new concepts and engineering.
Fiat’s supermini will be a low-cost car but yet it will have no competition with the Nano. Rather the upcoming car is to compete with cars like Hyundai Santro and Maruti Suzuki WagonR.
Fiat small car is to commence production by 2012 and will be rolled out from the company’s Ranjangaon facility.
But the vague information says that Tata Indigo will have the similarities of new India V3 (which was unveiled in 2008 Delhi Auto Expo and will be on Indian roads very soon). It is also said that the new indigo will carry the Fiat's 1.3 litre Multijet diesel engine. It will fall into the cheapest sedan class and will be competing Mahindra-Renault Logan.
